Radisson Blu Hotel & Residences in Zakopane

Eiffage Polska Budownictwo (EPB) has completed the construction of a four-star Radisson Blu Hotel & Residences Zakopane in the foothills of the Tatra mountains, southernmost part of Poland.

The new complex is only 2.6 km away from the ski lift to Kasprowy Wierch and consists of a hotel part (14,072 m2) and an apartments part of (7,350 m2).

The hotel part has already been put into operation – a total of 158 rooms, seven conference rooms, three bars and two restaurants are waiting for hotel guests. The Wellness & Spa centre features a gym, 20-metre swimming pool, hot tub, sauna and rasul mud bath. In addition, guests can also take advantage of an outdoor hot tub, which is an extension of the pool. On level -1, 49 parking spaces have been prepared, and another 61 spaces are available in the outdoor car park.

The last finishing works are in progress in the apartments part, which includes 68 residential units, with floor areas ranging from 28 to 175 m2, and 59 parking spaces on two levels of an underground car park. In order to build the underground floors, about 60,000 m3 of excavations were made prior to the commencement of construction works, which, due to the location on the slope of a mountain, required deep shoring. An additional difficulty was presented by the ground conditions, i.e. the hard and dense sedimentary rock (known as flysch) ubiquitous in the area of Podhale (Polish Highlands).

The body of the building, together with details, has been designed in the traditional highlander style typical for Zakopane. The building’s façade is made of larch wood beams with a height of 40 cm each. As such building material is impossible to find in nature, the beams are a high-quality wooden imitation, consisting of smaller wooden elements glued together under the press and subsequently cut to the right dimensions. The skirting on the building itself and the retaining walls is clad with split-faced stone tiles, the processing of which was very labour-intensive in order to obtain matching smooth surfaces. In addition, all technical equipment on the roof is covered with blinds so that they do not visually disturb the characteristic shape of the steeply sloping multi-gable pitched roof.

Apart from traditional materials and elements typical for the region of Podhale, the building also features many modern elements, such as aluminium facades and wooden and steel awnings covered with glass, as well as glass balconies, balustrades and partitions.
